Studio Notes - June 2020

You certainly don’t need for me to tell you that we are living in extraordinary times.  The only comfort that seems available is the connection between and among us, knowing that we are OK, that we will be better.  Please remain safe, kind and aware.

Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design in St. Louis has extended the show Tool Stories, with work by Jo Stealey and me, until July 12.  The show opened on March 6 and was almost immediately closed because of Covid-19.  Please check their website to confirm open times.

To read:  A website I ran into recently, Ozy, is very interesting.  Its tag line is, “Live curiously.” They have an app that you can download.
I have only been reading their stories for a short time but so far I think that I have found a promising news source to add to the list.  You might enjoy it, too.

To see:  Stuart Kestenbaum is the Poet Laureate of Maine.  He has been working with youngsters at The Telling Room in Portland.
Their mission: “At the Telling Room, we empower youth through writing and share their voices with the world. Focused on young writers ages 6 to 18, we seek to build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and provide real audiences for our students. We believe that the power of creative expression can change our communities and prepare our youth for future success.”  A lovely example of what they are doing is here.

To do:  Give something to someone.  Money to a charity.  A book to a child.  An offer to help a neighbor weed her garden.  A word of wisdom to a recent graduate.  A compliment.  An extravagant tip.  We all need good little surprises these days.

Sketches for Flight alphabet, Identified Flying Objects

Coming up:
Opening in late September at Cove Street Arts in Portland is an exhibition that I am curating, titled Flight.  Maine artists Kathleen FloranceGayle Fraas and Duncan Slade, Paul Heroux, Lissa Hunter, Lin Lisberger, Tim McCreight, and Lisa Pixley will explore many aspects of flight…natural, mechanical, geographic, political.
Please join us online or at the gallery.
